---CFAN 2024 series instruments A5S/S5/S6/S8, decoding the imperfections and authenticity of gems
Gems are rare and precious mineral crystals found in nature. They are highly prized for their brilliance, transparency, and hardness. Common gems include sapphires, rubies, emeralds, and diamonds. Gem identification techniques such as UV, IR, Raman, refraction, and polarization are now widely used to identify gems. However, the manufacturing process of artificial gems is becoming more advanced; these gems may look similar to natural ones. They are made using synthetic or improved methods, making differentiating those using traditional optical instruments challenging. Nevertheless, X-ray fluorescence spectrometer for analyzing trace elements in gems and identifying them has opened up a new horizon. It can differentiate between synthetic & natural gems and gems of different origins quickly and effectively.

2. Determination of natural and artificial ruby

Natural Ruby spectrum

Artificial Ruby spectrum

The major difference in elemental composition between natural and synthetic rubies is that natural rubies contain traces of gallium, iron, and chromium, while synthetic rubies do not contain gallium.
3. Determination of natural and artificial sapphires

Natural Sapphire Spectrum

Artificial Sapphire Spectrum

The main difference in elemental composition between natural and artificial sapphires is that natural sapphires contain traces of the elements gallium and titanium, while artificial sapphires do not contain gallium.
4. Determination of Ruby and Sapphire

Natural Ruby Spectrum

Natural Sapphire Spectrum

The main component of rubies and sapphires is aluminum oxide (Al2O3). Trace amounts of chromium ions cause the red color of ruby; the higher the Cr content, the redder the ruby, while trace amounts of iron and titanium ions cause the color of sapphire.
5. Determination of African and Colombian emeralds

Colombian Emerald Spectrum

African Emerald Spectrum

The main difference in elemental composition between Colombian and African emeralds is that Colombian emeralds contain traces of vanadium, while African emeralds do not.
The CFAN A5S/S5/S6/S8 2024 Series fluorescence spectrometer is the latest technology capable of analyzing the elemental composition of gems. Its purpose is to effectively differentiate between natural and artificial gems and determine their origin. The analysis process is both fast and non-destructive, qualifying it as a reliable tool for identifying gems.
